- Summary
- Shelly Parker, a sixteen-year-old servant working for the tyrannical Pastor Dobbins and his family in the Depression-era South, can see spirits. She's used to listening to their stories, but tends to ignore their warnings--until the ghost of Arleen Brown, who died in childbirth on Black Mountain five years ago, begins pursuing Faith Dobbins with a hell-bent desire to reveal the secret she took to her grave. Shelly never much liked the uppity, bossy Faith, but when she starts acting strange Shelly can't ignore the fact that she's the only one who can help. Soon the two young women find themselves tangled in a web of secrets sweeping from the saltwater marshes of Georgia's coast to the whispering winds of North Carolina's mystical Black Mountain, uncovering long-hidden truths that put their own lives in danger.
