- Summary
- Seventeen-year-old Louisa Cosgrove is locked away in the Wildthorn Hall mental institution, where she is stripped of her identity and left to wonder who has tried to destroy her life
- Summary
- After her father's death, 19th-century teenager Louisa Cosgrove believes that her mother is sending her to live with family friends -- but the carriage transporting her deposits her at Wildthorn, an insane asylum. There, the doctors insist that Louisa is not Louisa; she is, they tell her, a very sick young woman named Lucy Childs, and she isn't going anywhere. This Lambda Literary Award-winning novel combines a harrowing exploration of the era's "mad houses" with the tender love story of Louisa/Lucy and Eliza, an attendant at Wildthorn. -- Description by Ellen Foreman
